About the conference

On 26-28 September 2019 the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, the Department of Lithuanian Studies, the Lithuanian Association of Applied Linguistics LITAKA and the Institute of the Lithuanian Language hosted the fifth International Conference of Applied Linguistics Languages and People: Communication in a Multilingual WorldApplied linguists from Lithuania and other countries were invited to present their research from a range of disciplines, such as sociolinguistics, language policy, discourse analysis, translation, pragmatics, language teaching and learning, language testing, language acquisition, lexicography, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, etc.

 

Publication

  • Accepted abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings booklet with an ISBN number.
  • Conference participants will be invited to submit their research papers based on conference presentations for publication in the special edition of the electronic journal
    Taikomoji kalbotyra (Applied Linguistics) that will be issued in 2020. Submission deadline: 31 December 2019.
  • All submitted manuscripts will undergo peer-review procedures applied by the journal.

Previous conferences

Conferences of applied linguistics were started with the aim to bring together researchers of applied linguistics from Lithuania and other countries. It was important that specialists interested in the theory and practice of applied linguistics could meet and maintain their relationships, introduce and discuss their research, launch new ideas, debate any topical issues in sociolinguistics, language policy, discourse analysis, translation, pragmatics, language teaching and learning, language testing, language acquisition, lexicography, etc.

Since 2005 Vilnius has hosted four conferences of applied linguistics. The sixth conference will be held in 2022.

2005 m.

On 20-22 October 2005 the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, the Department of Lithuanian Studies, the Institute of Foreign Languages hosted the first International Conference of Applied Linguistics Languages and People: Present and Future. The plenary talks were given by David Crystal and David Graddol, two distinguished scholars from the United Kingdom.

2010 m.

On 23–24 September 2010 the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, the Department of Lithuanian Studies, the Lithuanian Association of Applied Linguistics LITAKA and the Institute of the Lithuanian Language hosted the second International Conference of Applied Linguistics Languages and People: Dialogues and Contacts. The plenary talks were given by Elana Shohamy (Israel), Piet Van de Craen (Belgium) and Jon White (United Kingdom).

2013 m. 

On 3–4 October 2013 the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, the Department of Lithuanian Studies, the Lithuanian Association of Applied Linguistics LITAKA hosted the second International Conference of Applied Linguistics Languages and People: Space, Time, Identity. The plenary talks were given by Joseph Lo Bianco (Australia), Mark Davies (USA), Antonella Sorace (United Kingdom).

2016 m. 

On 28–29 September the Faculty of Philology of Vilnius University, the Department of Lithuanian Studies, the Lithuanian Association of Applied Linguistics LITAKA and the Institute of the Lithuanian Language hosted the fourth International Conference of Applied Linguistics Languages and People: Diversity and Harmony. The plenary talks were given by Zoltán Kövecses (Hungary), Anne Pauwels (United Kingdom) and Norbert Schmitt (United Kingdom).
